Two new CDs by Little Rock bands, Exit Human's Arvada and Bumfish's Swimming Sounds, are out now and both deserve attention. Both already have been stashed by Brian in "Haggis Quick Stop" in the Little Rock Free Press. An honor, to be sure. I'm sure the bands could die happy having already been stashed and don't need me churning out my jumbled thoughts about their albums. But here are a few anyway.

Exit Human: Arvada, Direct-Hit Records

Man, or Astro-Man? may have performed with a giant brain in a fish tank on stage and may have claimed that the band (composed of actual humans) wasn't actually playing the music we were hearing. The band may have claimed that its members were merely fleshy puppets holding instruments, transmitting music actually made by a big brain via super-computer. Exit Human may have taken it a little further.

According to the literature, a detailed distress letter in the CD packaging, elaborated upon on the group's Web site, the music contained on Arvada wasn't composed or performed by humans at all. And Arvada isn't just the title of the CD. Arvada is the first, sentient, self-aware, artificially intelligent being. "She is as human as you or I," Raldron explains.

Oh yeah. Raldron is one of the Exit Human project coordinators. You know. Exit Human. The top-secret project to combine musical programming with pirated technology from the Human Genome Project. It's all sci-fi (as opposed to lo- or hi-fi?) and creepy and campy and funny.

So what kind of music does Arvada create? The disc itself is sort of a mix of computer-generated noise and glitchy techno, beginning with the song, "Arvada," which, with the digi-music equivalent of amniotic fluid, depicts the birth of Arvada. From there it moves into more melodic, sometimes complex, beat-oriented stuff. It's weird and good.
